Service

Custom Software Development

Software shaped around your operations, for the processes a packaged product will not bend to.

What this service is

Custom software development means designing and building an application specifically for one organisation's processes, rather than configuring a product built for a general market. It is worth doing when the process is a genuine competitive difference, when no package fits without expensive workarounds, or when licence costs across many users exceed the cost of owning the software.

The problem

What usually brings people here

The package nearly fits

You are paying for a product and still running the real process in spreadsheets beside it, because the last 20% was never configurable.

Per-seat costs outgrew the value

Licence spend scales with headcount while the functionality you actually use stays the same.

Work is re-keyed between systems

People move the same data between applications by hand, which is slow and quietly introduces errors nobody catches.

The process is the advantage

How you quote, route or fulfil is why customers choose you, and off-the-shelf software forces you to do it like everyone else.

Capabilities

What we do

  • Discovery, process mapping and requirements
  • Solution architecture and data modelling
  • Web application development
  • Multi-tenant and role-based access design
  • Integration with the systems you already run
  • Data migration from legacy systems and spreadsheets
  • Automated testing and release pipelines
  • Post-launch support and iteration

Use cases

Typical engagements

Operations platforms

Quoting, scheduling, dispatch, inventory or fulfilment workflows that span several teams and do not map onto a standard product.

Internal tools replacing spreadsheets

Shared workbooks that have become business-critical, with no validation, no audit trail and no safe way for two people to edit at once.

Customer and partner portals

External users needing scoped access to your data — orders, documents, status — without access to the internal system.

Delivery

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Discovery & requirements

We map how the work actually flows today — the systems, the spreadsheets, the manual handoffs — and agree what success looks like in measurable terms.

  2. 02

    Solution architecture

Data model, service boundaries, integration points and hosting. You get the shape of the system before anyone writes production code.

  3. 03

    UX & technical design

Screens and flows for the people who will use it daily, reviewed against the architecture so the design is buildable as drawn.

  4. 04

    Development & integration

Built in increments you can see and use. Integrations are wired early, because that is where most projects actually go wrong.

  5. 05

    Testing & quality assurance

Automated tests around the logic that matters, plus migration rehearsals against real data shapes before anything goes near production.

  6. 06

    Deployment & onboarding

Release pipeline, environment configuration, data migration and training for the teams who have to live with the system.

  7. 07

    Support & continuous improvement

Monitoring, fixes and the next increment. Software that is used changes; the engagement allows for that.

Before you commit

What to weigh up

Custom software is an asset you own and a system you must maintain. Budget for hosting, support and change after launch, not just the build. If a package genuinely fits your process, buying it is the cheaper answer and we will tell you so during discovery.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much does custom software development cost?
Cost is driven by scope, number of integrations and the state of the data being migrated. Anyone quoting a firm number before discovery is guessing. We run a paid, fixed-fee discovery that produces an architecture and a costed delivery plan you keep regardless of who builds it.
How long does it take?
A focused first release covering one workflow end to end is typically weeks. Breadth is what adds time: more roles, more integrations and more legacy data each extend the schedule, which is why we sequence a narrow first release and extend from there.
Who owns the code?
You do. Source, infrastructure definitions and documentation are handed over, and the engagement does not depend on us holding anything back.
Can you work with our in-house developers?
Yes. We can lead delivery, supply part of the team, or design the architecture and hand the build to your developers.
What if requirements change mid-build?
They will. Work is delivered in increments precisely so changes land between them rather than destabilising a long single release.

Our own products

Software we built on this

We use this capability on our own products, not only on client work. If one of them already does what you need, it will be cheaper than building it.
